The Trail Boss Checklist: 7 Things Every Dog Mom Needs for a Safe Hike

The Trail Boss Checklist: 7 Things Every Dog Mom Needs for a Safe Hike

Being a Dog Mom means your adventures are always better—and often dirtier—than going solo. Whether your trail partner is a fluffy Golden, a high-energy Husky, or a seasoned mutt, you know they're truly the Trail Boss.

But fun aside, hitting the trails requires planning. Here are the must-have essentials that ensure your hike is safe, clean, and totally enjoyable.

The Dog Mom’s 7 Hiking Essentials:

  1. Hydration is Non-Negotiable: Never assume streams are safe. Carry at least 1L of water for every hour of hiking for yourself, and an equal amount for your dog. Must-Have Gear: A durable, collapsible water bowl that clips right onto your pack. (Keep an eye on our new Trail Boss Collection—we might have a solution coming soon!)

  2. Trail-Proof ID Tags: This is your lifeline. Paper tags fade, and cheap tags break. You need an ID Tag that is durable, legible, and, let’s be honest, hilarious. Make sure it has your phone number and your dog's name (and maybe a witty slogan like "My Name Is Trouble"). Shop Now: Find the perfect trail-ready tag in our ID Tags Collection

  3. The Right Leash: A hands-free waist leash is great for flat trails, but a sturdy, 6-foot nylon or rope leash is essential for control on steep or narrow terrain. Always have a leash you can clip on fast!

  4. First-Aid Basics: A small kit should include gauze, antiseptic wipes, vet wrap, and tweezers for tick/burr removal. Pro Tip: Know the location of the nearest emergency vet before you lose cell service.

  5. Paw Protection: Hot asphalt or sharp rocks can quickly ruin a good day. While not all dogs tolerate them, consider lightweight protective boots for rough terrain. Otherwise, check pads frequently for cuts.

  6. Leave No Trace: Carry more waste bags than you think you’ll need. Clip the dispenser to your lead or pack so you’re never caught empty-handed. (The Trail Boss Collection will feature smart, durable waste bag dispensers soon—sign up to the pack to know when!)

  7. Emergency Snuggles & Fuel: Always pack extra high-value snacks for your dog (and some chocolate for yourself). Knowing you have a reward waiting makes the final push up the hill easier for both of you.
